The remote developer
More and more we see giant companies back to the idea of work in the office or hybrid way, these movements are explainable to be the fact exists employees that abuse from the situation and of course bad leadership that want to see their leds.
I love working from my home and I will defend this so way before the covid pandemic, but as a leader also, I can see terrible behaviors and maturity in some people when work in this way, creating this environment of insecure for the company create a truth into the employees.
So let's see some "good practices" for work from home to get the confidence for your company and your leader to you continue to be able to work from home.
- Dailies: This is a pretty important meeting to align the sprint goal or simple a status report that happens every day, it is a great opportunity to show how was your day, and you're planning for the next one, really getting into this type of meeting increase the leader confidence to you as normally the people make this in a bad way.
- Open the camera: Yes, it's strange, I know, I also struggle to do that, but some people really think this important, mainly these leaders that want the connection with their leds. Always that you are in a meeting with one person or few people, open the cam to everyone to see that you are there and paying attention, this will show that you care and you are "present".
- Notify absences: When you work at the office, you don't simple stand up and exit to do something in another place, you normally notify your leader and coworkers that you need to resolve something in other place that only works at the work time, it's normal. So remember, at the home is the same thing, notify everyone that you be unavailable for a time, and of course way before the time to exit.
- Use your calendar: When we are remotely, we gain the power to stay at various place at the same time and talk with different people at the same time, but this disconnected you for the important meetings that can be occurred, for example. So always show your status and keep this updated to show your availability, if is a meeting, stay in the meeting and show in your calendar that you are there, if you exit, show the out-of-office status, if you need to work and resolve something important, show at the not disturb status. Be real with your calendar.
These things are pretty simple if you pause to think, some of these points need to be added into your habits so can be a little hard, but the results are great. And of course DO NOT WORK AT TWO OR MORE JOBS AT THE SAME TIME, sure you can have others jobs, but do not overly their times, never.
